To maximize the lifespan of your laptop battery, the best percentage to charge it to is typically between 40% and 80%; this is often referred to as the "40-80 rule" and means avoiding fully charging your battery too often and letting it drain completely as well.

From my research (worth 0.2c) I have found that most OEMs (HP and others) have updated their laptop BIOS to prevent charging past about 80 percent.

Battery should last about 5 years but less for gaming systems. Have you done a battery calibration?

Go into your BIOS and see if there is a setting for the battery charge limit.

Set it to %100 if that option exists.

I suspect hardly anyone recycles laptop batteries.  There are probably tons of batteries in land fills.
