My keyboard is working with some select keys. Some other keys like esc, enter aren’t also working.

@Starr2002, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If multiple non-adjacent keys (like Caps Lock, N, B, Esc, Enter) on your HP laptop keyboard are not working, this typically points to one of the following causes:

Hardware Issue (Most Likely)

Cause: The keyboard membrane or connector might be damaged or loose.

Fix:

  • Basic check: Gently tap or press along the edges of the keyboard to see if the connection reestablishes temporarily.
  • Internal inspection needed: Open the laptop and reseat the keyboard ribbon cable (requires caution or a technician).
  • External keyboard test: Plug in a USB or Bluetooth keyboard. If all keys work normally, it confirms your built-in keyboard is faulty.

Driver/Software Glitch

Steps to try:

  1. Open Device Manager → Expand Keyboards
  2. Right-click and choose Uninstall device
  3. Restart your laptop — Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
  4. Optional: Go to HP Support and install the latest BIOS and keyboard driver.

System File Corruption

Try:

  • Run a system file check: sfc /scannow

in Command Prompt (as Administrator)

  • Reboot after it completes.

Keyboard Mapping or Accessibility Settings

Check if:

  • Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, or Toggle Keys are enabled.
  • Go to Settings → Ease of Access → Keyboard, and turn off anything suspicious.

Reboot and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F10 or Esc repeatedly during boot). See if those same keys (like Esc, N, or Caps Lock) work in BIOS.

  • If they don't work in BIOS, it’s a hardware issue.
  • If they do, it's more likely a software/driver problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
