Common problems for Battery

My intuition tells me that it has something to do with the fan from the notebook getting hot & shutting itself down. I notice this tends to happen when I hear the fan running loudly. I have already troubleshot the fan with no luck. And yes I have checked for dust. This started happening quickly after purchase. After extensive googling it does seem to be a problem isolated to HP with windows 10, a design issue. Not sure what's to be done but unexpectant restarts are likened to a car with a bad brake design, unacceptable.

The fan was the first thing I suspected. I replaced it with a brand new one, even though the original was dust free and seemed to be working fine. Changing the fan made no difference.

My guess is some sort of conflicting issue  between a Windows 10 update and either the HP software or AMD processor.

I've tried all the fixes and nothing.  My lap top is about a year - 1.5 old.  This problem started happening I'd say about 2-3 months ago.  VERY frustrating when I'm at work and in the middle of placing very large online orders!  I see a LOT of recent posts which angers me that they've not put out a fix for this.

Would restoring the computer to a chosen date before I remember the problem happening (maybe 6 months ago) work?   Possibly it would take me back to before and update that caused this problem???

Hoping one of us can figure this out - or better yet HP figures it out and offers the fix!

After attempting everything and scouting around the internet for solutions, I found something helpful. It is definitely not a FIX, but it's helpful.

It appears that there's some kind of conflict between the official Fall Creators Update for Windows 10 and a couple of AMD components' software, so this is a problem affecting several machines, not only HP ones. Since there are lots of complaints in AMD and in Microsoft, let's just hope a fix will come up in a near future.

Meanwhile, there is a way of preventing the random restarts to happen.

You just have to untick the fast startup of your system in the power settings. Surely, this is no acceptable solution because it derives into a slower boot up, but since I've tried it my machine has not yet restarted. For now, this will have to do and let's hope there is a proper fix for the issue.

I am having the EXACT same issue and cannot seem to get any answers!  I too have followed all of the troubleshooting recommendations on the HP site with no resolution.  My laptop is only a couple of months old and I have had this issue since I purchased it.

I am in the EXACT same boat!  I purchased my laptop around Christmas only to find all of the yearlong freebies were already expired, the 7.5 hour battery lasts about 2 hours, and my laptop does the same thing.  It doesn't matter if it is connected to power or on battery, all of the updates are run including the BIOS, it is not showing any hardware failure, and there is no warning whatsoever.  As a matter of fact, when I booted up about half an hour ago, before I could do anything it randomly restarted with no warning.  There is no pattern at all but it is incredibly frustrating as I have lost work repeatedly because of it.  Thankfully, I save as I go for that reason but sometimes it does it so quickly I can't save what I have just done.  It is really frustrating and looking at this site, seems to be a common issue.  I would love to know if there is a solution and am still searching the site in case I haven't hit the right tags.

Thank goodness a couple people posted a fix and I have not had a single random restart since!  (It was happening 2-3+ times daily)

Below is the wonderful post & steps that worked for me!   Hopefully it will help you too.

Subject: Re: Laptop randomly restarts

After the recent Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (1709) especially laptops equipped with an AMD processor have been suffering from similar symptoms.

At least some seem to have been helped by disabling the Fast Startup feature of Windows 10 which makes the computer start somewhat faster.

Does not hurt to try disabling it.

Do as follows:

1. Right click the Windows icon down left

2. Select Search

3. Type Control Panel and hit Enter

4. Click on Power Options

5. Choose what the power button does

6. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable

7. Unselect the Turn on fast start-up

8. Select Save changes

9. Restart
