HP note book. Difficulty charging. I need to wiggle the cable and sometimes give up before the orange charging light displays. How do I solve the problem?

@Motuki, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

I understand your HP notebook is having trouble charging and only connects intermittently when you wiggle the cable. This kind of issue is often related to either the charging port, power adapter, or battery connection. Let’s walk through some steps to help resolve it:

Inspect the Power Adapter and Cable

  • Check for visible damage on the adapter or cable (fraying, bent pins, loose connectors).
  • Try using a different compatible HP charger if available to rule out adapter issues.

Examine the Charging Port

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the DC-in jack on the laptop.
  • Look for dust, debris, or bent pins. Clean gently with a soft brush or compressed air.
  • If the port feels loose or wobbly, it may need professional repair.

Perform a Hard Reset

Sometimes a hard reset can help with power-related issues:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect everything and try charging again.

Update BIOS and Drivers

Outdated firmware can affect battery and charging behavior:

  • Visit the HP Support Website and enter your laptop model.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS and power management drivers.

Battery Health Check

Use HP’s built-in diagnostics:

  • Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Select Battery Test and run it.
  • You can also use HP Support Assistant to check battery status. HP Support Assistant | HP® Support

I hope your issue is now resolved. If not, feel free to reply and we’ll continue helping until everything’s sorted!
