Hi @timider70,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Crackling noises from a new laptop can be concerning, especially if they're persistent. Here are some possible causes and steps you can take to diagnose and address the issue:
1. Fan Noise
- Cause: A common cause of crackling or clicking sounds is the laptop's cooling fan. Dust or debris, or an improperly mounted fan can create noise.
- Solution: Ensure the laptop is on a flat, hard surface to allow proper ventilation. Check if the fan is obstructed or if there's dust buildup. If you're comfortable, you can use compressed air to clean out the vents.
2. Hard Drive Noise
- Cause: Traditional spinning hard drives (HDDs) can make clicking or crackling noises. If your laptop has an HDD, this might be the source of the noise.
- Solution: If you have a hard drive, ensure it's securely mounted. However, many new laptops use Solid State Drives (SSDs) which don't have moving parts and are quieter.
3. Electrical Noise
- Cause: Sometimes, electrical interference or issues with the laptop’s internal components can create unusual noises.
- Solution: Ensure that the laptop's power adapter and connections are secure. Try using the laptop on battery power alone to see if the noise persists.
4. Speakers or Audio Issues
- Cause: Audio components or speakers can sometimes emit crackling sounds, especially if there are driver issues or if audio is being distorted.
- Solution: Update your audio drivers through Device Manager or check the laptop manufacturer’s website for the latest drivers. Also, check the audio settings to ensure nothing is causing interference.
5. Thermal Expansion
- Cause: As the laptop heats up, different materials might expand and contract, occasionally causing crackling sounds.
- Solution: Monitor the laptop’s temperature. If it's getting unusually hot, check the cooling system or consider using a cooling pad.
6. Internal Components
- Cause: Loose internal components or connectors might cause noise.
- Solution: Since the laptop is new, it’s advisable to contact the retailer or manufacturer for support. They might offer a repair, replacement, or further troubleshooting.
7. Software or Hardware Diagnostics
- Cause: Sometimes, noise can be related to software issues or hardware diagnostics running in the background.
- Solution: Run the built-in diagnostics tool provided by HP ( HP PC hardware diagnostic tool)
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
