My HP Pavilion Plus 14 7840u laptop randomly shuts down out of nowhere but only on battery, when charging it does not shutdown at all. I have tried almost everything, reinstalled windows, swapped out wifi card for a new one, put tape on the wifi card etc etc! When it shuts down the power button is unresponsive and I have to plug the power supply for a sec to get the power button working again to power it on. I am lost.

Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot your HP Pavilion Plus 14 that shuts down randomly on battery:
1. Check Battery Health
- Use HP’s built-in battery diagnostic tool:
- Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
- Press F2 to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Select Battery Test to check the health of your battery. If the battery is failing, it may need to be replaced.
2. Inspect Power Settings
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
- Check your power plan settings. Ensure that the settings for "Sleep" and "Hibernate" are set appropriately.
- Look for any advanced settings that might be causing the laptop to shut down.
3. Update BIOS
- Check for BIOS updates on the HP Support website. Sometimes, BIOS updates can resolve power management issues.
4. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the laptop and disconnect it from the power source.
- Remove the battery (if removable).
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
- Reinstall the battery, reconnect the power, and turn it on.
5. Check for Overheating
- Ensure the laptop’s vents are clean and unobstructed. Overheating can cause the laptop to shut down. You might also want to monitor temperatures using a tool like HWMonitor or Core Temp.
6. Inspect for Hardware Issues
- Since you swapped out the Wi-Fi card, check other internal components (like RAM) to ensure they are seated correctly.
- If you’re comfortable doing so, reseat the RAM modules and check connections.
7. Run Windows Power Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Power. Run the troubleshooter to see if it detects any issues.
8. Check Event Viewer
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it in the Start menu.
- Look for any critical errors or warnings around the time of the shutdown. This might give you clues about what’s causing the issue.
9. Replace the Battery
- If the battery health check indicates that the battery is in poor condition or if none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider replacing the battery.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
