My laptop used to lag a bit before so I factory reset it and now when it boots up it uses like 7 gigs of ram and when I used rammap to empty pretty much everything my ram usage returned to normal. But after restarting it it returned to using pretty much all my memory again any ideas?

@jacob351, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
I understand your HP laptop is using around 7 GB of RAM right after boot, even after a factory reset, and that RAMMap temporarily reduces usage, but it spikes again after a restart. Let's walk through some steps to identify and resolve this issue.
Possible Causes
- Background Services or Startup Apps consuming memory.
- Memory compression or Superfetch (SysMain) service.
- Malware or bloatware running post-reset.
- Driver or Windows Update issues.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Check Startup Programs
Disable unnecessary startup apps:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Startup tab.
- Right-click and disable apps you don’t need at startup.
Check RAM Usage by Process
Use Task Manager or RAMMap to identify which processes are using the most memory:
- In RAMMap, check the Process tab.
- Look for unusually high usage by any app or service.
Disable SysMain (Superfetch)
This service can cause high RAM usage:
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find SysMain, right-click → Properties → set Startup type to Disabled, then click Stop.
Scan for Malware
Run a full scan using Windows Defender or HP Sure Click if available.
Update Drivers and BIOS
Outdated drivers can cause memory leaks:
- Use HP Support Assistant to check for updates.
- Or visit HP Software & Driver Downloads and enter your laptop model.
Check for Windows Memory Compression
Windows may compress memory to optimize performance, but it can appear as high usage:
- Open Task Manager → Performance → Memory.
- If “Compressed” memory is high, it’s normal unless performance is impacted.
Final Tip
If RAM usage remains high and performance is poor, consider upgrading RAM or checking for faulty modules. You can run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to test memory.
I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.
