I have no error messages but my webcam has stopped working on various video conferencing apps - teams, google meet, zoom etc. . . and when i choose the camera app from the launch bar it opens a grey screen with a camera icon but no image from the web cam.
any ideas?

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!
I see you are experiencing webcam issues with the HP Chromebook.
I have a few recommendations
- Turn off your Chromebook, then turn it back on.
- Try using the camera in another app, like Hangouts. If it works in that app, uninstall the app where it doesn't work, then reinstall it.
- Reset your Chromebook.
- Recover your Chromebook.
If you HP Chromebook is from 2020 of newer there will be a physical switch down the left-hand side of the Chromebook. Flick this switch, and your camera should start working. Then flick it again to put it back into privacy mode.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I too am having camera issues. I've done the "Powerwash" reset option a few times, and I've also purchased a stand-alone webcam that is compatible with the Chromebook platform. I have a Chromebook 15 15-de0518wm .
The camera works sometimes, and then suddenly stops. Whether it's Zoom, RingCentral, or just the camera app, it just stops and goes to the full black screen with the camera icon in the center.
I have not done the "Recover" option yet. May have to do this as a last resort option.
