HP Pavilion Plus 14 inch Laptop PC 14-ey0000 (7X856AV)

I hear a loud, annoying noise from my laptop speaker during conference calls, audio calls, and video calls, and while watching a program/movie. This noise is disturbing and does not stop once it starts; the only way to stop it is to terminate the call or connect a Bluetooth or headphone device. This problem began immediately after I purchased the laptop. I initially thought it was a minor issue that would disappear over time, but it seems to be a permanent problem.

Hi @Temiakbo,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The loud, persistent noise from your HP Pavilion Plus 14-inch laptop speakers during calls and media playback is likely caused by one of the following issues.

Audio Driver Issue

  • The problem might be due to outdated or incompatible audio drivers.
  • Solution:
    1. Open the Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
    2. Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
    3. Right-click your audio driver (e.g., Realtek or Intel Audio) and select Update driver.
    4. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
    5. Restart the laptop and test.

If the issue persists, try uninstalling the driver: 1. Right-click the driver and select Uninstall device. 2. Restart your laptop to reinstall the default driver automatically.

Interference or Feedback

  • This can occur due to microphone and speaker interference, especially during calls.
  • Solution:
    1. Right-click the sound icon in the system tray and select Sounds.
    2. Go to the Recording tab, select your microphone, and click Properties.
    3. Under the Listen tab, ensure Listen to this device is unchecked.
    4. Under the Enhancements tab, disable all sound effects.
    5. Test the audio again.

Hardware Issue

  • A speaker or internal audio circuit defect could be causing the noise.
  • Solution:
    • Test the laptop's speaker with the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool:
      1. Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly at startup to open diagnostics.
      2. Select Component Tests > Audio to run a test.
      3. Follow the on-screen instructions and note any error codes.

Third-Party App Conflict

  • Some conferencing or media apps might conflict with the audio system.
  • Solution:
    1. Update the apps where the issue occurs (e.g., Zoom, Teams, Skype, etc.).
    2. Use alternative apps to see if the problem persists.
    3. If you're using browser-based calls, test with a different browser.

Windows Audio Settings

  • Misconfigured settings can lead to audio distortion or noise.
  • Solution:
    1. Go to Settings > System > Sound > Advanced sound options.
    2. Check for and correct mismatched input/output device selections.
    3. Run the Troubleshoot sound problems tool under Sound Settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
