HP Notebook - 15-db0516ur
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have Liteon 128 GB SSD M.2 on SATA bus. I would like to make my laptop a little bit faster by change SATA SSD to NVME SSD.

In marketing information brochures, as well in Service manual http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06719946.pdf is written, that my laptop can be equiped by NVME SSD m.2 in size of 256 GB.

I bought new SSD (Samsung 980 PRO 256 GB, NVME). But for some reason, my laptop did not recognized that SSD was installed.

I tried to install the another one - from my PC - Intel 128 GB, NVME. The same - the system can not recognize NVME SSD. On boot process write me that "No drive installed or somethink like this".

Please tell me, what is my mistake? What should i do to make NVME SSD work on my laptop?

You may need to create a volume, initialize it and then format the SSD.

That can be done with the DiskPart utility from the command line.

You can do that from your desktop PC by using a PCIe or USB adapter

See the process at the hyperlink to a third party web document.

I think that it will not help.

Yes - my Samsung SSD is absolutely new, from shop. For sure I have to create a valume, to format it and etc. I want to make it with using of my boot\recovery flash memory with Windows ISO.

But the second SSD i tried, was from PC - Windows was already installed on this drive. And my laptop system did not see that disk - the system on boot wrote me that  "No drive installed".

Hi, @Redevilzel

I see from the specs for your notebook that it comes with an AMD A6 9225 processor.

Unfortunately, only the 15-db0xxx models that come with an AMD Ryzen processor support NVMe SSD's.

This fact is not mentioned in the service manual.

You will not succeed in getting a NVMe SSD to work in your notebook.

@Paul_Tikkanen

That is good to know. What is your resource for that?

Hi, @erico

Other posts where folks have tried NVMe SSD's in that model series with the AMD 7th gen dual core processors with no success.

Yet you can see from this discussion on the same 15-db0xxx notebook with the Ryzen processor, a NVMe SSD works just fine.

The product number in the discussion reveals the notebook is this specific model...

Also, the HP 255 G7 business class notebook, which is the business class equivalent of the 15-db0xxx model series...the service manual indicates that only SATA SSD's are supported, and the only way I knew that NVMe SSD's were supported was watching You tube videos where it showed NVMe SSD's worked in the notebooks with the Ryzen processors.

See chapter 1 where it only indicates SATA SSD's are supported.

I have concluded in general that very few (f any) HP notebooks with the AMD 7th gen dual core 'A' series processors support NVMe SSD's.  SATA Only.

Another note...unless the 15-db0xxx AMD 7th gen dual core processor notebook originally came with a M.2 SATA SSD, the slot is not there.

If it came with a Ryzen processor, then the slot is there regardless of what type drive it came with.
