Pavilion 15-cc123cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there!  Just opened up my Pavilion 15-cc123cl and confirmed it has an M.2 slot and according to the service manual, it can take an NVME PCIE drive so just wondering what the current state of recommend drives are. I read some posts from about a year ago saying the Samsung 960 Evos were having some compatibility issues with my model and were recommending a Samsung PM 961. Due to cost, I was considering going with a Sabrent Rocket 512GB, but don’t know if anyone has tried using this. If not, I’ll probably go with a 256 Samsung. Thanks!

You're welcome.

Yes. I always find it best to use known brands and they are actually quite cheap.

Best wishes for the New Year.

Hi,

There should be no problem using a Samsung 970 Evo Plus in your notebook. Only models with older gen CPUs have shown incompatibility issues, (Yours has 8th gen Intel Core CPU). So Samsung SSD should work well and is considered one of the best on the market (fastest). Now you could use a cheaper and slower SSD (still much faster than a regular Hard Drive) such as the Crucial P1 which will be much cheaper.

I always recommend known manufacturers. You can also look at WD, Kingston, Adata which all make good products.

Hope it helps,

David

Wow, thanks so much for the quick reply!  Good to know that the 960  Evos had compatibility only with older gen CPU’s.  The Samsungs are the cream of the crop. If using a different brand that would be a bit cheaper would not cause compatibility issues, then I will try that route. Good point about sticking with the more well known brands. Thanks again and happy new year!

I did as you suggested and put in a Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVME to use as my boot drive as well as the place to install my applications on and use the 1 terabyte drive it came with  to store my data.  Installation of Windows 10 Home was very smooth on the new Samsung drive. The only hiccup was getting my laptop to see my wifi router after installation of Windows on the new Samsung drive. I eventually figured out the WiFi card on my laptop was turned off and I just needed to turn it on (before I did the Samsung install the WiFi was on in the laptop and working fine - I don’t know if installing a new boot drive then installing Windows 10 automatically defaults my WiFi card to the off position , but in my case it did).  Now my laptop boots up between 10 and 12 seconds. Totally amazing!  Thanks again for replying to my question.

You're welcome.

Yes, it is amazing the difference a PCIe SSD makes to the everyday performance of the notebook. After getting used to it, it is difficult to go back and use a PC with a mechanical Hard Drive. It is just so much faster.

Best wishes,

David
