Hi, I’m helping someone with their HP Pavilion BK069SA laptop. I’ve installed a Samsung 980 NVMe drive in the laptop but it isn’t getting detected anywhere. Usually after installing, I’d go to Disk Management and it would show there as needing a volume. However, the disk doesn’t show.
anyone seen this on an HP laptop? The BIOS is heavily locked down, so it’s difficult to check anything in there unfortunately. I did wonder if the slot is disabled.
I have done chipset and firmware updates as well as bring the BIOS to the latest version but none of these things have helped

is that a 15 or 14 inch notebook? YOU forgot to include the two numbers that are part of the product name.
According to the Maintenance & Service guide for the 14 inch notebook, only SATA3 SSD products are compatible.
Crucial Memory agrees with the Maintenance & Service guide.

Thank you for responding. It is the 14” - I’ve looked through that manual and couldn’t see anything that suggests it won’t accept an NVMe drive, on page 18 for the storage devices it has an image of an NVMe drive. The motherboard has the slot for it too.

Hi,
The disk hasn't been formatted so the Disk Management can't see it. Another issue is the Secure boot because the laptop has Windows 10. That might prevent the system from recognizing the drive.

Disk management shows unformatted drives, because that is where you can convert to a formatted volume.
I will see if I’m able to disable secure boot, can’t remember if that’s accessible in the BIOS or not. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂

Try the diskpart utility at the command line if you have familiarity with it. Run it as admin. The utility will also show whether or not the new disk has a disk letter. Chances are that it does not.
The disks listed in the manual on page 18 are all SATA3 M.2 SSD types, not NVMe.

Unfortunately, the image shows a SATA PCIE SSD, note the dual keys. Also, the maintenance manual states the PCIE SSD drive option to be SATA 3, not NVMe. This laptop can use a 2.5" SATA SSD and/or a PCIE SATA SSD.

If you do not believe what the manual for your notebook and also a mainstream memory/SSD manufacturer states is compatible, I do not believe that we can help you.

I have just tried to do the same thing with the same laptop model and fallen foul of the same problem. What's misled us is that the m.2 socket on this model isn't keyed for m.2 SATA SSDs, so naturally we assume that it wants an NVMe drive. Well, now we know that it ain't necessarily so.
