Microsoft Windows 11

Hello guys,

I have the HP Envy 17 ch0022 notebook, with Intel i5-1135G7. I used CPUID-Z to find out if the PCIe is Gen 4 in order to upgrade the ssd to a 1TB.

So I installed a Samsung 980 Pro Gen 4 ssd, but to my surprise it doesn't run at Gen 4 speeds, but at around 3500 mb/s read and write in CrystalDiskMark.

In CrystalDiskInfo it doesn't show the transfer mode, it show only dashes there, and in Samsung Magician at Drive Details -> Interface -> PCIe I get 0x0.

In BIOS at Phisical Disk Info at Port it shows 0.0. I installed the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers from HP Support.

I couldn't make it to work in PCI e Gen 4 configuration.

So my question is: Is thsi a driver issue or the notebook is not hardware capable of connecting the Samsung 980  Pro in Gen 4 capability?

Thank you

You're very welcome.

Since the 980 Pro is only running at the generation 3 speed and Intel indicates the chipset is Gen 3, the conclusion would be that the NVMe slot Gen 3.

If the slot was Gen 4, the SSD would be running at or close to its maximum advertised sequential read/write speeds.

@cczmcc,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

The challenge as always is to obtain accurate detailed product specifications from HP (disclaimer).

As best as I could ascertain, the following links strongly suggest that your HP ENVY 17.3 Inch Laptop PC 17-Ch0000 (23S95AV) is fitted with an M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen 3 x4 slot.  That means you can only attain Gen 3 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD speeds: https://support.hp.com/rs-en/product/hp-envy-17.3-inch-laptop-pc-17-ch0000/2100286043/model/21002860... and: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c07067372.pdf.

Hope this was helpful.

Hi, @cczmcc

Below is the link to your notebook's processor specs.

Intel® Core™ i5-1135G7 Processor

While the processor itself is PCIe Gen 4, the chipset and associated peripherals such as the M.2 NVMe slot are PCIe Gen 3.

Thank you,

It came equipped with KIOXIA NVMe KBG40ZNV512G which is a Gen 3 SSD.

The CPUID and HEiNFO64 show that the graphics card is connected on Gen 4 PCIe bus.

So i am not sure if the nvme port is gen 3 or gen 4.

It is still strange that CrystalDiskInfo and Samsung Magician both cannot read the transfer rate and the type of PCIe it is connected to. That is making me believeI have a driver problem too.

@cczmcc,

From personal experience, I recently installed a 2TB Samsung 980 PRO Gen 4 Gaming M.2 NVMe SSD in an HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF desktop -which I knew to be a PCIe Gen 3 platform, and achieved impressive read/write speeds -though not too much faster than my Samsung 970 EVO Gen 3 M.2 NVMe SSD:
