Microsoft Windows 11

This laptop (HP 15-cc123cl) has an M.2 slot but I’m not clear whether it will take an NVMe or a SATA SSD. In reading about NVMe SSDs, a lot of users say they run hot so that is a concern IF it will take one.  As for M.2 SATA SSDs, they’re hardly available anymore. Should I just stick with a regular SATA SSD and not use the M.2 slot? If I get the Samsung 970 EVO Plus, would it work well and could I just take out the existing HDD and leave the SATA port empty. What would the whole procedure entail?

From page 2 of the manual which says

Dual-storage configurations (pre-installed options)

  • 2-TB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-/7.2-mm hard drive + 128-GB, 2280 M.2 SATA-3, TLC solid-state drive
  • 1-TB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-/7.2-mm hard drive + 256-GB, 2280 M.2 SATA-3, TLC solid-state drive
  • 1-TB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-/7.2-mm hard drive + 256-GB, PCIe solid-state drive
  • 1-TB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-/7.2-mm hard drive + 128-GB, 2280 M.2 SATA-3, TLC solid-state drive

That means it supports both SATA and NVMe.

You can keep existing SATA HDD for data

Sorry, still confused. Three are SATA 3 and one is PCIe - I see no mention of NVMe.

But above your list from page 2, it does list NVMe drives for cc1xx models. So I guess I can chance it.
