Nee Help With Replacement DVD/CD Drive Options for HP ENVY TouchSmart 17-j127cl Notebook PC

Hello,

I need assistance determining viable replacement Optical Drive options for my HP ENVY TouchSmart 17-J127CL Notebook PC. Between pulling the drive out and looking at the labeling and checking my system information, this is what I have, and need to replace:

Super Multi DVD Writer

Model: GU90N

FW: U900

HW: A

Type: AMCK701

Some say simply replace the drive with a Blu-Ray, others say you can’t do that. Some say any drive that will fit into the slot will work, but I have real trouble believing that. I just need to replace my failing DVD/CD Drive with something that will work. I don’t really care if it is Blu-Ray or not, it just needs to fit and work. Searching for a simple replacement has not been very fruitful.

Thoughts?

See pp. 46-48. You can buy a generic bare 9.5mm thick optical drive and reuse the caddy faceplate and connector on the back of the drive by just removing all those from the old disk and porting over to the new. Or, you can just buy a replacement unit from eBay in which case it is simply a matter of swapping in the new unit.
