Sadly, I dropped my laptop on the sidewalk yesterday. The palmrest is smashed on one side, jamming a couple of keys and I need to replace the palmrest. I have tried researching the exact part number, but cannot determine exactly which one it is. I do not want to take the part off without a replacement part on hand because I am afraid that it won't go back on due to the keys not lining up in the holes correctly. how can I determine the correct part number? thanks

Welcome to the HP User Community.
Open
Take a look at pages 11-12 . The illustrations show the "top cover" area of the system.
Open the manual to Page 62 to find the part numbers, a brief description to help you identify your cover type, and the necessary country codes.
Yes, you have to disassemble the entire machine to replace the top cover.
After reading the service guide and perhaps viewing a couple of You-Tube videos on disassembly, if you decide the task is beyond your skill set, consider taking the computer to a licensed computer hardware technician.

When I look at that, it shows me multiple options for the keyboard cover or palmrest, non of which sound like my laptop. The keys on mine are not backlit and these all are:

option 2 Keyboard/top cover for use models with 4-zone lighting (white legend + RGB backlight)L57323-xx1
option 3 Keyboard/top cover for use models with 1-zone lighting (dragon red legend + red backlight) with ThunderboltL57324-xx1
option 4 Keyboard/top cover for use models with 4-zone lighting (white legend + RGB backlight) with ThunderboltL57325-xx1

Sorry, can't help.
The serial number is supposed to - as much as possible - provide the information for an individual unit.
Interesting that the serial number is not enough - Product number generally leaves a bit of "maybe this and maybe that" - I would have though the serial number would provide a more concise list.
Based on the specifications for the other parts and what you can see on your (for example, number of zones and color of keyboard lights, whether the unit has Thunderbolt), look at the list compared to what you have on your computer to eliminate the "not mine" parts.
Open the Service Guide and compare the parts for your product to the list you see in the PartSurfer for your product / serial number. As an example, if your keyboard does not have a red backlit keyboard, that immediately eliminates that part.
