HP Envy m6-n015dx G6R97UA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My 83 year old mom has a 15" HP Envy touchsmart that I purchased for her almost exactly 3 years ago. Over time the hinges (right side in particular) have gotten stiff and the other day when she opened it, the right hinge broke its way out of the display frame. I have read that this is a very common problem. I have been in I.T. for over 20 years and have repaired many laptops, so I simply want to know where to purchase replacement parts, and which parts to order, since HP seems to be aware of this issue, but does nothing to help.  Rather than fight about it I just want to fix it. Thank you.

Well this is one area where I think we can help. I like to think I am pretty good at finding laptop replacement parts for the best possible price. Here is the Manual:

Manual

Exploded diagram and parts list on p. 16. What do you need? This may involve disassembly to assess whether the hinge mounts are destroyed such that you need a new top cover, base enclosure or anything else.

Certainly you need the hinge kit:

Display hinges, includes: 720548-001 (2) Left and right hinge covers (3) Left and right hinges and bracket

The repair essentially involves deconstructing the laptop and then building it back up in a new chassis. I have personally done this repair more than a few times. One other option is to find a unit with say a cracked screen or dead motherboard and use it as a parts donor. Depends on what parts you need and how available the chassis parts may be.

I do not want to get into a discussion about assigning blame, In other words, don't get me started. I am just willing to provide technical assistance.

Post back with any further questions.

Fantastic!  This is what I needed.  I definitely need the 720533-001 Display Enclosure in addition to the hinges, as the screw mount is stripped out of the molded plastic. I originally thought (before I saw this) that I might use some JBWeld and epoxy everything back together, but I really don't think that's going to last very long, so I'm giving up on that idea. Plus there's the original source problem of the hinges that need replacement anyway, so thanks for that link too.  Thanks again for your quick response and the links!

Forget epoxy...works for a few days at best. I am assuming you are in USA?

$16.19 for LCD back cover which is where the hinge screws go in. You can reuse your front bezel:

If the upper mounts in the screen housing are bad its very likely the lower mounts in the base enclsure are bad, too.

I'll tear into it this weekend when I have some time, and will see just exactly what parts I need. I'm worried about the mounts in the base enclosure as well.

Yes, I am in the USA.
