The HDD is failing on my Compaq Presario CQ56 and I need to find the correct replacement. Existing HDD is a WD2500BEVT, 2.5" 7mm, 5400 rpm SATA; it has an Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU 900, 2.20 GHz.
I'm not sure what other info is needed but I'm having a hard time discerning the correct HDD from all the different types out there. I purchased my laptop in October of 2010 and up until 4 months ago all was working fine and then the SMART screen warning came up. The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Just about any 7mm SATA 2.5" 5400 RPM notebook hard disk will work.
It does not matter if it is SATA, SATA2 or SATA3 (6 GB/sec). The SATA specification is downward compatible.
Here are some HDDs at NewEgg.com

Considering the model year your notebook came from, I suggest putting as little $$ as possible into getting it running.

Thanks for the information it is very much appreciated,
As for not putting much money into the machine as far as I know I only need a new hard drive, but is my only laptop and as I stated it has run just fine up until the SMART warning came up. Most of the trouble I've had has been with Microsoft and their security patches and updates, and after I install the new hard drive and a fresh copy of Windows 7 I plan on installing a different OS.
Again thanks for the help.
