Hi
Are you sure the scope of the work is not beyond you?

Hi
Mainly because the 2 types of SSD storage, and the fact that you asked about a cable.
The EVO you linked to has a single keyway.
The Intel OPTANE in the spec has 2 keyways, like the crucial piccy below.
There appears to be no place to connect a cable, but the 2.5" SSD in the bottom picture would be a swap for the HDD that is fitted, and an external caddy and cloning software may be of benefit.

I am not going to try to discourage you with irrelevancies. The "two types of SSDs" is a complete red herring and would only be brought up if you had not done this upgrade with your own hands, which I have several times. Yes your plans are possible to carry out. This is your Service Manual:
The laptop comes with a 16 gig Optane module which is nothing more than a small capacity NVME M.2 SSD. Yes it is a B + M keyed device but the "M" keyed 970 Evo fits in the same slot and will work fine. You will have to deactivate the Optane module and remove it when you get the laptop. Boot to Windows out of the box, and use the Intel Rapid Storage App and unclick the Optane acceleration option. Reboot a couple times just to be sure the data on the Optane gets moved over to the hard drive. When you have it booting right to just the hard drive and running in Windows use the HP backup and recovery app to make a usb recovery disk. This will work to restore the laptop to out of box condition. When you have that made, remove the back cover. See p. 32 of the Manual:
M.2 red HDD green
Remove both the Optane module (red circle) and the hard drive (green square) and put the Evo 970 NVME where the Optane module was. Now boot the laptop from the usb restore disk and run the recovery. When you are done you will have the original factory image running on the superfast NVME M.2 disk. Since you are doing this on a new laptop no need to transfer anything; the recovery will make it just the same as what was on the hard drive.
When you have that working you can put the hard drive back in and format it for storage usage. This should not be beyond your abilities and you have us here to back you up.
Post back with any more questions and please accept as solution if its the info you needed. Good luck.

Yes PCIe/NVME is about 6 times faster than SATA III. About 3200 mbps vs. about 550-600 Mbps. The difference is noticeable although even the SATA SSD is much faster than a mechanical hard drive and not to be dismissed.

Hello I am attempting to disable the intel optane in the bios I was looking at a video only where there was an option to disable into the bios but mine just lets me choose between my intel optane 16gb and my sata mechanical harddrive I am guessing I am supposed to choose the sata drive then save, there is no option to simply disable.
Would this be correct?
Also I want to make sure I order the correct RAM I want to get a 1 x 16gb ram
here is a picture of what is installed
Here is the specs for the official HP RAM
https://www.memory4less.com/hp-8gb-sodimm-pc19200-862398-855
very expensive
Will this alternative work ?
Thanks!

Ok good yes I disabled using the rapi storage app I just thought there was a bios piece that required disabling. I order the hard drive and ram just wanted to pop the laptop open to make sure before I ordered.
