I had a failed hard drive. Replaced it and now it will not boot with the windows 10 ISO. Screen shows Boot Device Not Found 3F0. Looked it up and says it needs an Intel Optane memory. It does not look like the 15 AY600CY has the M.2 connector for the Optane . Will putting in a SSD solve the problem. How come it did not need the Optane in the first place?

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I reviewed your post and I understand that the computer is not booting with the new hard drive.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
Have you replaced the hard drive with the same capacity?
Do you have an operating system on the hard drive?
Meanwhile, I recommend you boot to BIOS and check whether the hard drive is detected in BIOS. Then reseat the hard drive and try booting the computer.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!
Cheers!

Hi @PopsOtto
Are you booting from a USB drive with Windows on it? Or from a DVD with Windows on it?
The error is not about Optane, it means it is not finding the drive with an OS (Windows) on it.
Here is a guide on how to install:
Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.
When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.
I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.
https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html
Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.
Hope it helps,
David

Thanks for the reply's. I first put in an OEM 1 tb hard drive. I kept getting a message that it would not boot to HDD and needed a Intel Optane. After much searching, found that this model does not have a space for the M.2 connection it needed. It seemed to indicate that maybe the original HDD was to slow to boot the current program. Anyway I returned the OEM HDD and got a Crucial SSD BX500 for $15 more. Cheaper than trying to get the Optane adapters plus the OEM HDD. Installed the SSD and it booted up from the USB flash drive with no problem. It's now much faster and will probably last longer than the old HDD.
Also I never partitioned the SSD. Seems like it did it from the ISO install as it showed the partitions when the SSD was checked after the install.

Great, Glad you got it up and running. Yes, the Windows install will create the necessary partitions for the OS.
It is kind of amazing how much difference an SSD makes to the everyday performance of the PC.
You can install HP support assistant which will help to keep all your HP drivers up to date and much more.
