HP Spectra x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a brand new HP Spectra x360 and I am trying to use a thunderbolt docking station via the USB-C port to use two screens. I have done this with several other laptops and my current office laptop (dell) is using the same type of set up. My HP laptop does not recognize any other displays. If i hook a single monitor to the hdmi port it does recognize the display and functions normally. I have also switched out the thunderbolt with one I know is working and i get the same results so the issue is not the thunderbolt, which leaves the USB-C port not working. getting a hold of HP support is a challenge so I have not been able to get their help so I am hoping this could provide a solution.

Hello @glkiess,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Have you tried any firmware/driver updates or BIOS updates? I don't know your model so I can't pinpoint the exact updates you could try.

You can try installing them yourself or inform me of the model name/product number.

Examples include:

  • HP Spectre x360 - 13-ap0028ca or 5MT98UA#ABL
  • HP ENVY x360 - 15-dr0042nb or 6EL70EA#UUG
  • HP Notebook - 17-by0003na or 4AP04EA#ABU
  • OMEN by HP 15-dc1030nr or 6FE64UA#ABA
  • HP EliteBook 850 G5 Notebook PC or 3JX11EA#ABU

Information on how to find a laptop's product name or product number is detailed in this HP document. (Please do not post serial numbers on the HP Support Community. The difference between a product number and a serial number is that the product number contains a # sign)

Furthermore, when you connect the Thunderbolt dock as well as the two displays, when you right-click the Thunderbolt icon in the taskbar, as seen below, then select View Attached Devices, what do you see? You can also right-click and select Approve Attached Devices.

Whenever there's a problem with a USB-C port, some people (including myself), have found that doing a hard reset magically resolves issues. You could try it as well:

  1. Turn off the laptop
  2. Remove any external accessories
  3. Unplug the power cord
  4. Remove the battery (only if it is external and removable)
  5. Hold down the power button for at least 15 seconds
  6. Reinsert the battery if it was removed
  7. Plugin the power source
  8. Attempt to turn on the device
