HP EliteBook 8570p Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an old 8570p model. It had its long dead original battery inside up until recently when I bought a new replacement battery from Batteries Plus (Nuon, the house brand. It was only option they still had available). After following initial charging instructions on the package I only got 1 hour and 47 minutes of operational time just on battery power. Both the retailer and I assumed the battery was bad, so they replaced and the second battery also only powers for 1 hour and 47 minutes as well. I was issued one of these models at work when new back in 2012 and don’t recall the operational time on battery power alone to be so short. Bad batteries? Do I need to perform calibration procedure? Computer hardware or software issue? I want to keep this amazing old machine alive for a second life with Linux post Windows 10.

I found an HP Support video called “Calibrate The Battery On HP Notebooks” and followed the video as far as I could. The replacement battery instructions called to initially charge 4 hours, fully discharge to the point shutdown (which my laptop can’t do because it self-shuts down by locking then going to sleep when the battery reaches a 5% SOC I assume to protect data, so it never fully discharges) then it said to charge another 4 hours. I followed that procedure as best my system would allow, then tried the steps in the video. The repeating memory test lasted until reaching 5% I assume, then the system put itself to sleep. I charged until I noticed the amber indicator light simply appeared dark. When starting up normally the SOC was at 97%, not 99-100% like the video said. I used the laptop until SOC reached 85% then shutdown and restarted for the battery test as per video. Battery tested “OK”. Could not perform calibration process due to not having the option available after the battery check. Could not find option anywhere in the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. So there is where I’m at. Still only getting 1 hour 47 minute of battery power.

Current setting: When selecting the battery icon in lower right corner (Windows 10), of the four option degrees along the slider between Best battery life and Best performance it’s set to the third virtual detent of the four: “Power mode (on battery) Better Performance”. Even when slid all the way left which keeps the computer in perpetual Battery Saver mode, then restarted, I'm still only getting 1 hour and 47 minutes of battery power. What's up with this machine?
