HP Pavilion x360 - 15-cr0053wm

My keyboard will not work properly. Part of the keys work (space bar, enter, ctrl, esc) but the letter keys and number keys will not function. I did all the troubleshooting. Tried to restart, uninstall the driver, used external keyboards. The external keyboards also do not owrk properly with the laptop. They work fine on other devices just not the HP. Then I read in the HP forum from an HP person to reset the pc to factory settings. So I did that. And now I can not use the pc at all!!!!!!!! I am beyond frustrated. I'm stuck trying to reset it because the keyboard doesn't work for me to type my network password key in. Someone please help me fix the thing.

Hi @Davis7941,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since the keyboard is not working even after a factory reset and external keyboards also fail to function properly, this suggests a deeper issue—either a hardware problem with the laptop's motherboard or a corrupted driver/firmware issue.

Use an On-Screen Keyboard

Since your physical keyboard isn't working, you can try using the on-screen keyboard to type your WiFi password.

  1. On the WiFi setup screen, look for an "Ease of Access" or "Accessibility" icon (usually in the bottom-left corner).
  2. Select On-Screen Keyboard.
  3. Use your mouse or touchscreen to type the password and complete the setup.

Try a Different USB Port or Wireless Keyboard

  • If you have a USB keyboard, try plugging it into different USB ports.
  • If possible, try a Bluetooth keyboard to see if it works.

Boot into Safe Mode

If you manage to get past the setup:

  1. Restart your laptop and hold down the Shift key while clicking Restart from the login screen.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings and restart.
  3. Press 4 or F4 to boot into Safe Mode.
  4. See if the keyboard works in Safe Mode.

Update Keyboard and Chipset Drivers

If you regain access:

  1. Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
  2. Expand Keyboards and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Right-click each device and select Uninstall device, then restart the laptop.
  4. Go to HP's official website and download the latest keyboard and chipset drivers for your Pavilion x360.

Perform a BIOS Reset

  1. Turn off your laptop.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to drain any residual power.
  3. Turn it back on and immediately press F10 repeatedly to enter the BIOS.
  4. In BIOS, look for an option to Restore Defaults (usually under "Exit" or "Advanced").
  5. Save and exit.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

The keyboard is not the issue. Even external keyboards that I k ow work, don’t work when plugged in. The computer is going into tablet mode when it’s supposed to be in laptop mode. I’ve turned off tablet mode all together but it’s still doing it. The keyboard works for bike and then stops. Part of the board is fine. Like the meter key and space key. I’ve done driver updates and troubleshooting but it says nothing is wrong. This is a fundamental flaw with this laptop that I’ve found numerous “questions” about but not real answer on how to fix!

Hi @Davis7941,

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue where your laptop’s keyboard and external keyboards aren't functioning properly, and your laptop keeps switching to tablet mode unexpectedly. There are a few possible reasons this could be happening, including software conflicts, sensor issues, or hardware problems.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and hopefully fix this issue:

1. Check Tablet Mode Settings Again

Even though you've already turned off tablet mode, it might be worth revisiting the settings, as sometimes there are additional settings that could override or conflict with the normal mode.

  • Go to SettingsSystemTablet.
  • Make sure "Tablet Mode" is turned off.
  • If you see a setting called “When I sign in,” make sure it's set to “Use desktop mode” instead of tablet mode.

2. Disable Auto-Rotate

Sometimes, the laptop might think it’s in tablet mode because it’s detecting movement or rotation. If your laptop has a built-in accelerometer (motion sensor), this could cause it to switch modes automatically.

  • Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Look for Sensors and disable any entries that may indicate accelerometer or orientation sensors.
  • Alternatively, go to SettingsSystemDisplay, and turn off Auto-rotate if that option is available.

3. Update/Reinstall the Keyboard Drivers

Even though you've tried updating the drivers, it’s worth trying a reinstall of the keyboard drivers to see if they’re functioning correctly.

  • Open Device Manager again.
  • Look for Keyboards and Human Interface Devices.
  • Right-click on the keyboard entries (both internal and external) and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop, and Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers for the keyboard.

4. Check for Windows Updates

Sometimes, Windows updates contain fixes for hardware-related issues like this. Even if you’ve updated drivers, there could be important system updates that address this issue.

  • Go to SettingsUpdate & SecurityWindows Update.
  • Check for updates and install any that are available.

5. Reset the SMC (System Management Controller)

If your laptop has a sensor that’s misreading orientation, performing a full reset of the system management might help:

  • Shut down the laptop.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds, then release it.
  • Turn the laptop back on, and check if the issue persists.

I hope this helps.
