HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp1000 IDS Base Model
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

I recently customized and purchased a 17z-cp100 directly from HP.

Here are the basic specs:

-------------------------

HP Laptop - 17z-cp100
17.3" diagonal, FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, anti-glare, 250 nits
128 GB PCIe® NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD
Full-size, backlit, natural silver keyboard with numeric keypad
8 GB DDR4-3200 SDRAM (2 X 4 GB)
MediaTek Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6™ MT7921 (2x2) and Bluetooth® 5.2 combo
AMD Ryzen™ 7 5825U (up to 4.5 GHz, 16 MB L3 cache, 8 cores, 16 threads) + AMD Radeon™ Graphics

The issue I have is that when I tore down the laptop in order to install a SATA hard drive, I noticed that there was no connector to the motherboard for a SATA hard drive even though there was a place for it in the plastic. I figured since it was configurable at the time of purchase with the option of a 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA (with an  additional SSD)  that everything would have been included that was needed for this kind of connection.

I have since I purchased a 1TB SAMSUNG 990 PRO M.2 NVMe drive which should arrive in a few days so I should be good with that. Although, if possible, it would be nice if I could install a SATA SSD with this NVMe drive simultaneously.

I guess what I am asking at this point, is if there is a part that I can order that would allow me to install a SATA SSD in this laptop?

@trogscave,

Welcome to our HP User Forum.

Yes, I see what you mean. According to: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/ish_6380291-6380534-16#:~:text=Hardware%20%20%20%20Feature%20%..., the HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp1000 series comes in one of three storage configurations: Single SATA, Single M.2, and Dual storage versions.

But mind you, HP added this explicit disclaimer, quote: "NOTE: The actual product configuration varies by country/region. Some features or components might not be available for certain countries/regions."

And indeed, when we look here -the actual 17z-cp100 laptop version you got: https://support.hp.com/za-en/product/hp-17-laptop-pc-17-cp1000/2101006188/product-info, and click on the "Illustrated parts catalog" link: https://support.hp.com/za-en/product/hp-17-laptop-pc-17-cp1000/2101006188/document/ish_6336564-66852..., we see the following:

There's only one M.2 NVMe SSD storage slot.  At least from what I can see (if you can take a picture of your motherboard, I'll go over it carefully), HP appeared to have made it impossible to add any other storage drive.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Thank you for that in depth answer.

If this is indeed the case, I would have gladly paid $50.00 more for the dual storage version of the motherboard.

The option I would have chosen would have been the "1 TB 5400 rpm SATA HDD + 128 GB PCIe® NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD" for $50.00 more. I guess I am stuck with what I have now.

I will take a few pictures of the motherboard when my new M.2 NVMe drive arrives.
