HP 17-ca1211ng
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The reserved video memory on my HP 17-ca1211ng is fixed at 2 GB, so I can only use 6 of 8 GB RAM and there is no BIOS-setting to adjust it. This has been bugging me for months (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/HP-17-ca1211ng-No-BIOS-setting-for-sh...) so I was looking forward to installing the latest BIOS update F.56 (https://support.hp.com/de-de/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-17-ca1000-laptop-pc/26210380/model/296...).

The update description says "Adds Video RAM Size to the menu of built-in devices in the BIOS setup page."

That would be great. But after installing it there is still no such setting in the BIOS menu. There is not even a menu of built-in devices.

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

HP Consumer Pcs use a customized BIOS setting (Tattooed BIOS) of which some features including overclocking and increasing the VRAM are locked.

This is done in the best interest of safeguarding the PC for the optimal performance and not to cause any extensive component failure.

To conclude, the VRAM on your PC is already shared with a specific value and its locked and cannot be changed.

Thank you

Thanks for your reply. Yes the setting is locked - but locked to a way too large value of 2 GB. It doesn't make sense for non-gaming usage to reserve one quarter of the available RAM. That is why I was looking forward to the BIOS-update F.56. After all the update has been released to resolve this issue - the update description says "Adds Video RAM Size to the menu of built-in devices in the BIOS setup page." But the one thing the update claims to do - it doesn't.

You could try increasing the Virtual Memory if you are facing any performance issues

This is not about performance issues. I am trying to report a bug here, so please inform the developers about this issue.

Bug report:

Model HP 17-ca1211ng

1. HP publishes a BIOS update F.56 with the sole purpose of adding a VRAM size menu entry in the BIOS setup

2. I installed the update on my Notebook

3. Expected behavior: A new menu entry for VRAM size should be in the BIOS setup.

4. Actual behavior: The menu entry for VRAM size is not there after the update.

So I assume the BIOS update is not working the way it is supposed to do, or am I wrong?
