HP ENVY x360 - 15-ds0002na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello! I recently purchased this new laptop at the beginning of January. It's an HP ENVY x360 - 15-ds0002na.

Ever since I got the laptop, I've noticed that the fan gets really noisy when downloading updates, watching videos, or playing games. I understand these are all things that require more processing power so it makes sense the fan should kick in in these instances, but I've never had a laptop before where the fan  is SO loud that I can't even concentrate on what I'm doing. It just sounds unhealthy.

I've managed to find a setting where I can change the laptop's fan to 'quiet mode', which works in the sense that the fan just doesn't turn on for lighter tasks any more. But when it understandably turns on during updates or video games, it's unreasonably loud and distracting.

I'm not sure if this is a fault or just a feature of the laptop.  It doesn't seem right that to make the laptop usable I've had to change the settings so that the fan just DOESN'T TURN ON in most cases. My old laptop was so much quieter.

I'd really appreciate some advice on whether this is normal for this model, or whether it's a hardware issue with the fan. And if it *is* normal, am I allowed to change my mind and choose a different laptop??

@jo_10,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I reviewed your post and I understand that the fan is making a loud noise.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

Based on your description, it looks like the fan is functioning correctly as all the settings you are changing are affecting the behavior of the fan. However, I recommend you update the BIOS and the graphics driver from the below link and check if it helps.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Hello. Thanks very much for getting back to me!

I have done as you suggested and updated both the graphics driver and the BIOS, but the fan is still making the same noise as before. It's a very constant loud whirring noise - almost like a electric razor... It does seem to be working fine, I just can't get used to how loud it is.

Can you tell me where you found the setting to adjust when the fan comes on and not?   I am having the same issue you describe.

Hi! It's in the 'HP Command Centre' which you can search for in the search bit of the Start bar. 'Quiet Mode' makes it so the fan doesn't come on for more everyday things, but it'll still come on for bigger tasks.
