Hi @Beekay2008,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

  • This is not a Windows error
  • It cannot be fixed by reinstalling Windows or changing Windows passwords
  • HP cannot bypass or remove a hard drive lock without proper authorization

What you can try now

1. Enter the correct hard drive password

  • Restart the notebook
  • When prompted for the hard drive password, carefully enter the password that was originally set
(Note: this is often different from the Windows login password)

2. Check for a DriveLock or BIOS password

If you recently enabled security settings:

  • The password may have been set in BIOS > Security
  • If someone else previously owned or configured the laptop, they may have set it

3. If you do NOT know the password

Unfortunately:

  • HP cannot unlock a hard-drive–locked disk without the correct password
  • The data on the drive cannot be recovered if the password is unknown

Your options in this case are:

  • Replace the hard drive
  • Reinstall Windows on the new drive
