HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-g161no
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi

What I'm trying to do:

I'm trying to update the bios on my HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-g161no, and I found sp100743.exe on the download page. It's supposed to be a service pack for my model of HP, but I'm not able to find a *.bin file name that matches (is identical to?, documentation not being very clear) my board id. And when I try to run the .exe in windows recovery console it says that the service pack isn't compatible with my version of windows. I tried installing it through bios setup (against best advice, I know) but the bios setup program (in bios) frooze for several hours until I turned the computer of. It still seems to work like normal.

The issues I'm trying to fix

1. Windows 10 wouldn't boot, or repair, or reset... so I reinstalled windows 10 from installation media downloaded from microsoft. But apon restart I got the PTE (product theft enforcement) message. Microsoft needs to learn how not to call their customers thiefs, anyway,

2. Then I booted several versions of Linux from usb (live image). But the wifi wasn't working, including on a version of linux mint where I know for sure that wifi should work, since I've booted that very same image on another computer. So I'm starting to think that my bios is broken somehow. (The wifi was working on windows 10 some time ago, so I know it's not a hardware issue.)

Thanks for reading.

Edit:

I'm wondering if I'm seeing something wrong. The file is right there, I downloaded it, but it doesn't contain the right .bin. Wait a minute, could it be that the .exe creation tool auto detect the operating system it's running on and that it only works if you run it from a windows 10 computer? I tried running it both from Wine and a windows 7 or 8. (funny how I don't know)

Hi

Maybe the "tattoo" has faded.  The Main Board has serial number etc tattooed into it and without that it is a blank vanilla MoBo.

Since it is called 80AEF54 I suggest it is Main Board 80AE bios F54 and seems to contain 4 files.

But not really a usable executable methinks.
