That sounds like the motherboard. If you want to fix it I suggest buying a replacement motherboard with the same part number. You could swap over your CPU, RAM and heatsink, memory, etc. Motherboard may still be fairly expensive, however. It is a rather challenging machine to disassemble, as well.
You want this one:
System board (includes replacement thermal material): ■ With discrete graphics subsystem and 1 GB of dedicated memory 574680-001

You are kind of fighting a losing battle here with an 8 year old laptop. Here is the Service Manual:
There is no better AMD motherboard and you even have the second-best processor. The best is only .1 ghz faster so not worth the effort to upgrade. You could theoretically swap over to an Intel motherboard. However, you would need a new board, a new processor, a new heatsink and maybe even a new wireless card and the total expense and effort would not be worth it. At the end of the day you would just move to less obsolete, but still obsolete hardware.
Post back with any more questions. If this is an "I don't care about the cost" kind of thing we can walk you through the process. The top of the line Intel board and processor for this series still brings pretty high prices on the used market.
This is the Manual for Intel models that would fit in the same chassis:

After 8 years I think you have to assume something is wrong. It is not necessarily the motherboard. When you say nothing appears on the screen do you even get a logo and the backlight coming on or literally nothing?
