hp envy ts 17 notebook
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I have spent days trying to figure it out.  About 3 months of first use I noticed that the battery was not charging.  I never even had given thought to that problem until I discovered it.  May have been a problem from the day I started.  The following is my conclusions:

  1.  Will not start with battery disconnected  or dead and only external power supply is connected.

  2.  Will only start if I charge battery somewhat and is connected.

  3.  When shut down, battery will charge if external supply is connected.  Power supply led turns amber indicating it is charging.

  4.  Conclusions:

         a.  power supply is defective.  Do not have a spare to test,,, however, it will charge the battery properly and fully which leaves the next concljusio n.

        b.  The power supply plug may not be functioning correctly or the female unit it connects to is defective.  I concluded that there has to be more than one funtion is in the female unit and it is possible that the power supply portion to start with only power connected is defective.

I am 85 years old and have great difficulty handling a lap top because of its miniature components.  For this reason I did not open to confirm my suspicions.  Besides, if I had a circuit diagram I would open the computer.  Of course, obtaining the part is another problem.

All sources I have checked on this problem  does not have a successful repair.

Hi David_J_W (Teacher) .

Thank you so very much as I feel you have found the solution.  My power supply is rediculusly short of wATTAGE.  It is only 45 watts.  My laptop has

a touch screen  which is 17".  As I mentioned in my post, I thought my computer came with this low power supply and logicaly could be overlooked that it needed a higher wattage.

I cannot locate a power supply to test it today, but ordered one which will arrive Sunday.

I am listed as a student???  I have repaired 1000s of computers in my life time with complete success for everyone tackled.  I am telling you this because you deserve accollades for your superior ability to analize trouble shooting data.

Hope to have contact with you after arrival  and success.

You must be an awesome teacher and am sure a great help to all your students.

All the symptoms might point to an inadequately sized power supply. What wattage is the power supply you have?

If I have found the correct Maintenance and Service Guide, your system appear to support 120W, 90W or 65W power supplies - but the 65W supply could conceivably be too small to power the laptop with no power in the battery or to charge the battery and run the laptop simultaneously.
