Pavillion 17- e017dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop has been overheating (reaching temperatures of 130 C) for a significant amount of time now. My cpu power is 2.1 MHz which can be overclocked to 3.1 MHz. Right now it is operating at 3.1 MHz but  I haven't overclocked anything. It just does it by itself. I am using ATI Catalyst Control Center and specifically the power tab in the app to set the max frequency to 2.1 but it doesn't respond. It keeps running on 3.1 MHz. I also set it to 1.9 with and nothing changed. I updated the ATI CCC and the BIOS and still nothing. I contacted AMD, gave them details but they couldn't help me. They said I should get the operating temperature of my laptop from HP. I guess the optimal temperature is not 130 C. I have tried everything and it doesn't seem like I can control in any way the CPU frequency . It keeps running in the range of 1.3 to 3.1 MHz. Any suggestion will be helpfull here! Thank you!

Hello and thank you for your help. I got to the bottom of it. I rarely use my battery, most of the times my laptop is operating plugged in. So I used the battery after some time and realized that the laptop wasn't overheating. So I went back to ATI Catalyst Control Center and tried to find differencies on the two operating modes( Plugged in -Battery). It turns out that if you click on thr Power tab and then The PowerPlay tab you can see that there are two options for each mode( Plugged in - Battery) and these are maximize battery life and maximize performance. When plugged in the option in my case was set to maximize performance so I selected the maximize battery life option. After that the laptop was operating constantly on 2.1 MHz which is the frequency that it is supposed to be working on, therefore I don't have anymore overheating issues!

@Giannis008,

Good day. A  warm welcome to the Hp community. I reviewed the case. I will be happy to assist you here. Great commitment and excellent description of the issue. Kudos to you for that.

  • Does it happen while playing High intensive games or videos?
  • Are you using third-party apps to measure CPU and GPU temperatures?
  • Did it happen after a recent power outage or surge?
  • Did it occur after a software or Windows update?
  • Does your computer lockup freeze or shutdown?
  • Is the fan noisy?

Let's try these steps:

Now check for issue resolution. If it continues, then there is more to it than meets the eye. The computer's hardware could be faulty and it needs to be repaired. I am being honest here by keeping your best interest in mind.
