my HP stream laptop 11 works fine but once it gets towards 20% it just locks without warning and the power LED light blinks 3 long times followed by a short one... It charges just fine... What do I do?

@Ada_agu, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

I understand your HP Stream 11 notebook locks up without warning at around 20% battery, and the power LED blinks 3 long times followed by 1 short blink. I’ll be happy to help you troubleshoot this.

This behavior typically points to a battery calibration issue or a failing battery. The blinking LED pattern (3 long, 1 short) is often an HP diagnostic code indicating a battery failure or low battery voltage.

Recommended Steps

Perform Battery Test in HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

Let’s first check the battery health:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Press the Power button, then immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Select Component Tests > Power > Battery Test.
  5. Run the test and note the battery status and any failure ID.

Calibrate the Battery

If the test passes, the battery may just need calibration:

  1. Charge the laptop to 100% and leave it plugged in for 2 more hours.
  2. Unplug the charger and let the battery drain completely until the laptop shuts off.
  3. Leave it off for 3–5 hours.
  4. Plug it back in and charge to 100% again without interruption.

This helps the system recalibrate the battery percentage readings.

Can I take all these steps if my Windows isn't activated? Cause it expired some time back...

HP Recommended

@Ada_agu, Yes, you can still perform most of the troubleshooting steps even if your Windows isn't activated. However, there are a few limitations and workarounds to keep in mind:

Steps You Can Still Do Without Activation

HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)
This runs outside of Windows, so it works regardless of activation status.
➤ You can access it by pressing Esc > F2 during startup.

Battery Calibration
This is a manual process and doesn’t require any software or activation. HP Notebook PCs - Testing and calibrating the battery (Windows) | HP® Support

Generating Battery Report
You can still open Windows Terminal (Admin) and run:

  1. powercfg /batteryreport

The report will be saved even if Windows isn’t activated.

BIOS Update
You can download and run BIOS updates from HP website - Official HP® Support. Activation isn’t required.

Steps That May Be Limited

HP Support Assistant
Might not work properly or allow updates if Windows is not activated.

Windows Update
Some updates (especially optional drivers) may be blocked or limited.

Personalization and Settings
You won’t be able to change certain settings like themes, lock screen, etc., but this doesn’t affect battery diagnostics.

I hope this helps!
