HP Notebook 15-dy1044nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

In recent weeks, my PC has been shutting down without a low battery warning. More recently, it's been shutting down at 50% battery.

I've tried manually calibrating my battery twice using the BIOS's Extensive Memory Test and there's been no change.

My PC is 4 years old, but I recently replaced the battery around 2 months ago.

My drivers and software are up to date. And actually, I believe the most recent update is to blame.

Please help me resolve this issue...I don't want to keep my PC's AC Adapter constantly plugged in but I have to to avoid the loss of progress as a student.

Hi @VioletMika,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing quite a frustrating issue with your HP Notebook. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

  • Check Power Settings: Ensure that your power settings are properly configured. Sometimes, settings like "critical battery action" might be set to shut down the laptop at a certain battery percentage.
  • Battery Health Check: Even though the battery is new, it's worth running diagnostics to check its health. Some laptops come with built-in diagnostics tools that can analyze the battery's condition.
  • Reset Power Management: Try resetting the power management settings on your laptop. This can sometimes resolve issues related to unexpected shutdowns.
  • BIOS Update: Check if there are any BIOS updates available for your laptop. Sometimes, BIOS updates can address power management issues.
  • Software Troubleshooting: Since you suspect that a recent update might be the cause, try rolling back recent updates (especially any updates related to power management or drivers) to see if the problem resolves.
  • Battery Calibration: Calibration attempts you've made are good, but if they haven't worked, there might be a deeper issue.
  • Battery Replacement: If all else fails, and especially if the laptop is shutting down at 50% consistently despite calibration attempts, it's possible that the new battery is faulty.
  • Physical Inspection: Check for any physical damage to the battery or the laptop's charging port. Sometimes, physical damage can cause power issues.

Remember to backup your important files regularly, especially if you're experiencing unexpected shutdowns. This will prevent any loss of data.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
