14-ck1007tu
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello.

I'm thinking of buying 14-ck1007tu, which is said to have a sata port and an m.2 slot. I have a 480g 2.5" so I thought if I got my hands on this notebook I should install it with appropriate case and wire/pin, etc.

But The customer support said I cannot use a 2.5" ssd with m.2 already in use and that I should install an hdd instead. They said this is not because of whitelists or testing, but rather pcie lane issues. I thought if m.2 and sata share the same pcie lane, then the sata port might not connect, and this had nothing to do with what goes in the sata port like ssd or hdd. Can anybody please give me the correct answer? I will try to find the manual for this model and provide the link, but I'm already thinking there is none.

I am not sure who you were talking to but he/she is sadly misinformed. Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

red = HDD bay green = M.2 slotred = HDD bay green = M.2 slot

Above from p. 36 of the Manual. You can replace a 2.5 inch HDD with a 2.5 inch SATA SSD and either one occupies the same PCIe lane and will work just fine. You can easily add an M.2 SSD to a laptop that comes with only a HDD since you only need a screw to mount the M.2. But if you buy the laptop with just an M.2 SSD, HP will not provide the mounting hardware for a 2.5 inch disk and those pieces can be hard to find and expensive. So if your goal is to buy one with a hard drive and upgrade to a 2.5 inch SATA SSD you will be OK; the hardware you need will be included. The 14-ck1007tu comes with only a 128 gig SATA M.2 SSD it will NOT have the caddy and cable needed to mount a 2.5 inch SSD.

The system can use a PCIe/NVME M.2 SSD which is the fastest storage currently on the market by quite a bit but a SATA SSD either M.2 or 2.5 inch form factor, is a quite significant upgrade from a mechanical hard drive.

Dear Huffer,

Thank you for your fast reply. Since you are an expert, can you also tell me if I got this correct, please: for this product, the m.2 socket and sata port do not interfere with each? I got confused when you said either one occupies the same pcie lane.

And where do you find these manuals? I can't find any in the Korean customer support.

The Manuals are available by a google search. Just search by your model number and the word "manuals" and it comes up. Since I do not read Korean I have not tried to find that version. Yes, the laptop is optionally sold with dual disks...M.2 + HDD so the two disks do not interfere with each other. That is just not a "thing" and I can't understand someone saying that. I am sending this on a laptop that has 3 disks...a pair of M.2 and then a SATA SSD...HP Zbook 15 G3.
