OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-wf0000 (755G1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My faith in OMEN has been shattered, as it can't support 64GB of RAM, and the second SSD slot is unusable.

I recently purchased an OMEN by HP 16.1-inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-wf0000 (755G1AV) for work, and I also bought two Kingston DDR5 32GB 5800 laptop memory sticks and a 1TB WD SN750 SSD.

This is not a cheap laptop, and it's shocking that it has such major issues. I have a three-year-old ROG laptop that was only 70% of the price of this one, and it doesn't have any of these problems. My colleague also has an OMEN laptop from two years ago that works fine. Before buying this laptop, I checked that the manufacturer sells a 64GB model of this year's OMEN, so I went ahead with the purchase. Maybe my mistake was not buying the exact same model.

Here are the strange phenomena I've encountered, which have completely changed my understanding of laptops:

  1. After removing the original two 16GB RAM sticks and inserting the two 32GB sticks, the laptop powered on but then froze. Even clearing the CMOS didn't help.

  2. After removing the original two 16GB RAM sticks and inserting just one 32GB stick, the laptop powered on but then froze. I tried both slots, and the same thing happened.

  3. After removing one of the original 16GB RAM sticks, the laptop powered on but then froze. I couldn't even access the BIOS, and clearing the CMOS didn't help.

  4. The Micron official website states that the OMEN 16-wf0 supports 32GB DDR5. So, I bought the exact same model of memory stick, removed one of the original 16GB RAM sticks, and inserted the Micron 32GB stick. The laptop powered on but then froze, and I couldn't access the BIOS. This happened with both slots. The Intel official website states that the 13700HX supports up to 192GB of RAM. So why can this heavy, high-performance laptop only support 32GB?

  5. The second SSD slot doesn't work. After inserting the 1TB SSD, the laptop powered on but then froze. I couldn't access the BIOS, and clearing the CMOS didn't help. There might be other reasons for not supporting 64GB of RAM, but there's no excuse for the second slot causing the laptop to freeze. I tried the SSD in an NVMe external enclosure, and it worked fine.

Unfortunately, I need this laptop for AI-related work. I'm frustrated and need to vent, in addition to describing the problems.

Is it possible that future BIOS updates could fix these two major issues?

Solved, reset the BIOS again and it will be normal. Both 64G and SSD Slot2 can be used.

Hi @rojarsmith,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your OMEN computer. If your OMEN PC can't support 64GB of RAM and the second SSD slot is unusable, it could be due to a few reasons.

  • Hardware Limitations: It's possible that your specific model of OMEN has hardware limitations that prevent it from supporting 64GB of RAM or using the second SSD slot. This could be due to the motherboard or chipset in your system.
  • Compatibility Issues: It's important to ensure that the RAM and SSD you're trying to install are compatible with your computer. Different systems have specific requirements for RAM and SSDs, and using incompatible hardware can lead to issues.
  • BIOS/UEFI Settings: Sometimes, BIOS or UEFI settings need to be adjusted to enable the use of additional RAM or storage slots. Check your motherboard's documentation or contact HP support for guidance on adjusting these settings.
  • Faulty Hardware: There's a possibility that the second SSD slot is physically damaged or that the RAM module is not functioning correctly. In such cases, you may need to replace or repair the affected components.

To diagnose and address the specific issues with your OMEN computer, I would recommend the following:

  • Verify the compatibility of the RAM and SSD you're trying to use with your system by checking the manufacturer's documentation.
  • Check your OMEN PC's user manual or contact HP support for guidance on its maximum RAM capacity and compatibility.
  • Ensure that the hardware is correctly seated in its respective slots and connections are secure.
  • Update your system's BIOS/UEFI firmware to the latest version, as sometimes updates can enable support for additional hardware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I have contacted the official physical repair shop, but these problems have not been solved. I am also a SW practitioner myself. In fact, I have tried most of the methods.
