Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi everyone,

In my quest to keep my 10-year old laptop alive and modern, I've done a few things (SSD replacement, new fan, HDD in DVD drive, constant updates, bluetooth). My laptop now runs faster and smoother than pretty much anything you can buy in the $1,000 range. While apparently not supported, I was still able to upgrade to Windows 10 (64-bit). My computer has functioned tremendously ever since, however I've recently noticed that when I use Hibernate, my computer instead does a hard shutdown, and I lose all of my data when I boot back up.

Now my computer is ancient by modern terms, but I'm stubborn and plan on using this baby as long as possible. I've tried to do the steps outlined at this post: https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c03383935

I've done all the preliminary steps, such as disabling fast startup, modifying my power options, running every troubleshooter, etc. This is not the issue.

I believe the problem is that my old computer won't allow me to update to version 9 or 10 of the Intel Management Engine Interface driver. My computer can't go past version 6, which is from 2009 (see images below).

I totally get that this is an old computer, but it runs faster than the two brand new Lenovo work laptops the company I work for gave me. With no new BIOS updates coming out and the HP and Intel world seemingly leaving this laptop to become a relic, I'd still like to be able to sort out how to keep this thing going! Any help is very, very appreciated!

Thanks,
Justin

Hi:

The only suggestion I can offer would be to install the last W7 chipset driver Intel released, and restart the PC.

Download, unzip and run the setup application...it will usually install some newer motherboard drivers than what W10 installs.

Otherwise you may just have to forego the hibernate option, and disable it.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the swift response. Unfortunately, even after downloading and installing the chipset and restarting the computer, Hibernate still causes my laptop to do a hard shutdown. It makes the same little sound that my laptop makes when I hold down the power button for a hard shutdown.

I suppose I'll have to get rid of Hibernate after all!

Cheers,

Justin
