My Omen 16 randomly crashes and when it restarts everything is normal, except the keyboard, which only writes the previous key inputs, every third key press. Restarting and driver updates have not changed it.

Hi @Sant1001,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Experiencing random crashes and a non-functioning keyboard upon startup can be frustrating. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to address the issue with your HP Omen 16.

  • Update drivers and BIOS: Make sure you have the latest drivers and BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) installed for your laptop. Visit the official HP support website, enter your laptop's model number, and download the latest drivers and BIOS updates. Install them accordingly and see if the issue persists.
  • Check for overheating: Overheating can cause crashes and other hardware-related issues. Ensure that your laptop is not overheating by checking the temperature levels. You can use third-party software like HWMonitor or SpeedFan to monitor the temperature of your CPU and GPU. If the temperatures are unusually high, clean the air vents and cooling fans to improve airflow and prevent overheating.
  • Run hardware diagnostics: HP laptops usually have built-in hardware diagnostic tools. Restart your laptop and press the appropriate key (often F2 or F10) to access the BIOS or diagnostic menu. Run the hardware diagnostics to check for any potential hardware problems that might be causing the crashes and keyboard malfunction.
  • Disable startup programs: Certain programs or services that launch during startup can conflict with your system and cause crashes. Try disabling unnecessary startup programs and services to see if it resolves the issue. You can do this by typing "msconfig" in the Windows search bar, opening the System Configuration tool, navigating to the "Startup" tab, and unchecking the unwanted programs.
  • Perform a clean boot: A clean boot starts your laptop with only the essential Windows services and drivers, eliminating any software conflicts. To perform a clean boot, press "Windows + R," type "msconfig," and press Enter. In the System Configuration window, go to the "Services" tab, check the box that says "Hide all Microsoft services," and click "Disable all." Then, navigate to the "Startup" tab and click "Open Task Manager." Disable all the startup items listed in Task Manager. Restart your laptop and see if the issue persists.
  • Restore to a previous working state: If the problem started recently, you can try restoring your laptop to a previous restore point when it was working fine. Press "Windows + R," type "rstrui.exe," and press Enter. Follow the instructions in the System Restore wizard to choose a restore point and revert your system settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
