Yes, you should be fine with a heatsink on the drive.

When you open the notebook there is just a thermal pad inside that cover, so it's nothing fancy.

The heatsink on the 990 Pro will be just as good or better than the HP thermal solution.

Hi:

I don't believe that it would be a good idea to install a NVMe SSD that includes a heat sink.

The reason I write that is because if you look at chapter 5, pages 32 & 33 of the service manual, you will see that the NVMe SSD's are in a thermal enclosure already and the added heatsink would not allow the drive to fit the way it is supposed to.

Personally, I like Samsung NVMe SSDs so if it were me, I would opt for the 990 Pro model without the heatsink.

You may find it helpful to check on Amazon and read the customer reviews on both drives.

  • Thank you for your reply. I already bought ssd about 2 month ago =(  Can i remove laptop thermal ssd cover to fit this samsung ssd ?

You're very welcome.

After you open the notebook and remove the SSD cover you will be able to see how much clearance you have.

Since there is a cover, there is probably enough clearance between the SSD and the bottom cover if the drive has a heatsink, but needless to say, I wouldn't be able to tell you for sure.

I have one more question. Well, if I have enough space and it fits, it would be safe to use it without this thermal protector, right? Because this ssd has a heatsink, when I think about it, it seems reliable to me.

Thank you so much again . I saw at your shared pdf manual i recently notice that one ssd slot is gen3 other one is gen4 support. It is very disappointing. I have 2 ssd gen4. I cannot use full performance other one.

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.

Maybe since your notebook is a newer model than what the service manual covers (17-ck0xxx), HP has upgraded the 2nd slot to PCIe Gen 4.0 in the 17-ck2xxx model series, so there is hope for that.

Please post back and let us know.
