OMEN by HP - 15-dc0045nr
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

My battery won't charge and I can't start or run the computer without it being plugged in. I've tried to run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics and the results always read cancelled. The HP Support Assistant's HP Battery Check result is Unknown. So I'm not getting error message or any way to identify the problem so I don't know how to request help or can find a way to fix it. It is an internal battery, so I can't remove and check the battery in any way physically either. Does anyone know any other way to identify the problem so I can fix it?

Thank you,

Brian

Hi @briansdevine,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding battery issues on the the Omen by HP laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the laptop from the power source.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual electrical charge.
  • Reconnect your laptop to the power source and attempt to power it on.

Perform a Battery and AC Adapter Test:

  • Ensure that you are using the original AC adapter that came with your laptop, as third-party chargers may not always be compatible.
  • Try using another compatible AC adapter if available to rule out the possibility of a faulty power adapter.

Update BIOS and Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website to check for any available BIOS updates or driver updates, particularly for the battery management system.
  • Updating the BIOS can sometimes resolve power and charging issues.

Inspect for Physical Issues:

  • Check for any physical damage to the charging port, AC adapter, or power cable, as these could lead to charging issues.
  • Ensure all connections are secure, and try different wall outlets.

Battery Calibration:

  • If you can manage to charge it a little, try to fully discharge the battery and then charge it back to 100% to calibrate it.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi,

Have done the hard reset tons of time, doesn't help with the battery.

The computer won't turn on with the AC adapter. I use the original. If the AC adapter was faulty the computer wouldn't even turn on, right?

Everything is up to date.

No physical issues. It is an internal battery, so it can't be removed, inspected, or replaced.

Can't charge the battery at all.

What is next?

Thanks,
Brian

Hey @briansdevine

Thank you for your response

My colleague @Kuroi_Kenshi is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.

Run Battery Test (Before Windows Loads)

Turn off the laptop.

Press ESC repeatedly, then press F2 for Diagnostics.

Run the Battery Test.

Reset BIOS & Power

Turn off laptop, unplug charger.

Hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Turn it on, press ESC > F10 for BIOS.

Press F9 (reset BIOS), then F10 to save.

Check in Windows (If It Starts)

Go to Device Manager > Batteries.

You should see:

"Microsoft AC Adapter"

"Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Battery"

If these are missing, your battery may be dead or not detected.

Let me know how it goes.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi,

I brought it in person to a Best Buy and they said I have to replace the battery and that I can but it on the HP website. Can you please specify the exact battery I need to buy please?

Thank you,

Brian

I did that. The Best Buy said to ask here. What type of battery does a 2018 Omen HP Laptop need and where do I order it?

2 different possible batteries:

4 cell 70 Whr 4.55 Ahr LI SR04070XL-PL
3 cell 52 Whr 4.55 Ahr LI SR03052XL-PL

I found reported on a 3rd party site that your laptop uses the 4-cell battery which seems correct but I would prefer to find the official HP specs which I have not.

This link is for a compatible 3rd party battery which will work fine for you.

And here is a link to a site with the Service Manual

Start on p. 44. The laptop is designed for end users to work on it by removing the bottom. The screws come out easily. However, replacing the battery is a technician repair item because it requires a bit of caution and experience. However a careful end user could do it, I believe. Post back if you need any more info. An official HP battery can likely be located but would cost significantly more. On a laptop of this age I have no problem using compatible 3rd party batteries to save money.
