Hi @GauNG,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 14s laptop is showing a "fan not working properly" message and you're hearing grinding noises, here are some steps you can take to address this issue:

  1. Clean the Fan Area:
    • Power Off and Unplug: Make sure the laptop is completely powered off and unplugged.
    • Access and Clean: If you're comfortable opening your laptop, you can gently remove the bottom cover and clean the fan area. Use canned air to blow away dust and debris that may be causing noise or blockage.
    • Caution: Be careful not to touch any electronic components directly. If you’re not familiar with opening your laptop, seek professional assistance.

  2. Check for Physical Damage:
    • Inspect the fan blades for any visible signs of damage. Grinding noises can sometimes be caused by a foreign object stuck in the fan or a broken blade.

  3. Update BIOS and Drivers:
    • Ensure the BIOS and fan control drivers are up to date. This can sometimes resolve fan speed issues or alert discrepancies. You can update them using HP Support Assistant | HP® Support:
      • Launch the HP Support Assistant from your Start Menu or taskbar.
      • Follow the prompts to check for updates, particularly for BIOS and chipset drivers.

  4. Seek Professional Repair:
    • If cleaning and visual inspection don’t resolve the issue and the noise persists, it’s advisable to contact HP customer support or visit an authorized service center. There may be a need for component replacement, especially if the fan is physically damaged.

Grinding noises typically indicate mechanical failure or obstruction, so addressing these promptly is crucial to avoid further damage to your laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
