My optical disc drive stops (hp DVDRW  DA8AESH USB Device) working properly after a minute of two, two and a half when listening to a cd. After that, the cd just stops and Media Player doesn't detect a cd. When I'm trying to rip a cd, I have to restart the ripping after a song of two, three. It's a new laptop and I can't find driver updates. Is it an hardware problem, or are there software/driver solutions I need to check first?

@InspectahLaptop,

Thank you for replying,

I understand you need information regarding updating the Bios,

Updating the BIOS, also known as "flashing the BIOS," replaces the BIOS firmware. When completed successfully, a BIOS update can fix or enhance aspects of a computer's performance, or provide support for newly installed hardware. However, if an incorrect update is installed or if the update process is interrupted, the motherboard can be permanently damaged, leaving the computer unable to boot. It is recommended to update your BIOS only if one or more of the following conditions apply:

  • The update fixes a problem with your computer.

  • The update enhances your computer's performance in the desired way.

  • You are planning to change the operating system, processor, or other feature(s), and the current BIOS version will not support the new configuration.

  • An HP Support Agent, or an HP support document, recommends that you download and install a specific updated BIOS.

@InspectahLaptop,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I see from your post that you are having issues with the optical drive not working on your HP notebook. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?

Did this happen after a software update or Windows update?

Did you check if the drive is detected in the device manager when the optical drive stops working?

Have you tried to update the device drivers?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the notebook

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:

1. If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.

If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.

2. With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.

3. With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.

4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to update the Bios on your computer from our HP support website, using this link.

Also, download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.

once done, restart the computer and check.

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to follow all the steps suggested in the support document for - HP PCs - CD/DVD Drive Cannot Read Discs (Windows 10, 😎

Could you please respond to this post with the details and with the results of the troubleshooting as this will help me in further assisting you.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Hello @Jeet_singh, thanks for the extensive response. I've tried the hard reset, but the disc drive still stops working when playing a cd in 2, 3 minutes.  I have checked for driver and other updates when I installed the laptop (I bought it last week), and there are no new drivers available in the HP support assistent. I've also checked with the device manager if there are driver updates, but it says the drivers for the disc drive are up to date. I've also ran the hardware and devices troubleshooter, as mentioned in the 'CD/DVD drive can't read discs' link, but it hasn't detected any problems.

I guess the two options left are testing the drive and updating the Bios. I've heard updating the Bios can be risky. Is it safe to do? I'll run the drive test today!

Hello @Jeet_singh

I've ran the test as described in 'Step 3: Test the drive for a hardware failure'. The first test (continous, perhaps? I've ran it in Dutch) was succesful, the second test (randomized?) failed. Error-ID: GLG708-98EE98M-MFGJ3G-6HME03. I want to run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics program as well, but the F: drive isn't listed under 'storage medium' (again: running in Dutch, so that's my translation, but I guess you know what it's about).

I'm the Riddle_Decipher & I'm writing on behalf of my colleague @Jeet_singh, as the tech is out for the day, that said, I have reviewed your concern and the entire conversation, did some research and here's what I recommend:

As the hardware test confirms a failure and a malfunction within the hardware,
