Example: Envy X360 13-AY0106AU
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Envy X360 Laptop (512GB  with Ryzen 7), which I bought 5.5 months ago,  becomes very hot underneath when using it on battery power but the heat increases dramatically when it is being charged and it is so hot after being fully charged that I cannot place it on my lap. The charger is also very hot.  This heat issue has only become noticeable in the last 4-6 weeks and I have also noticed the usage time on battery charge seems to have reduced from when I first bought it.

I have briefly looked at heat problems on the HP community site but the main solution seems to be ensuring there is no dust or fluff caught in the vents. I have checked that aspect and it is not an issue. It's not in a dusty or fluff prone environment. To my layman mind it seems like a battery / battery charger or possibly internal settings type issue but I'm only guessing which is why  I'm seeking a solution from the HP experts and Envy users on this website.

I love the device because it is compact, powerful, functional and can be used anywhere around the house. My usage is infrequent and  is limited to browsing the internet using Google Chrome;  culling the large library of travel photos that reside on the main desktop computer, via a wifi link between the two machines, and some occasional editing with Photoscape X software on the HP in preparation for producing a Travel PhotoBook using the PhotoBookshop software on the main desktop because it is connected to a large screen.

If a solution is not available from this site, I may seek out my local computer shop and if it's still not possible to find a solution to my heating problem I'll be approaching the retailer for a solution under warranty conditions.

Thanking you in advance for any technical assistance but don't just tell me to check the vents for dust.

Cheers Kapricorn

Hi @kapricorn,

I'd like to help!

I understand you facing battery heating issues

A relatively warm power adapter is normal, especially when the laptop is in use while the battery is charging. However, if the adapter is quite hot, enough that it could hurt your hand after touching it for a few seconds then you need to consider replacing the Ac adapter.

Run hardware diagnostics test on battery and Charger:

Use the following steps to open the Component Tests menu.

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  3. On the main menu, click Component Tests.
  4. The Component Tests menu displays. Your Component Tests menu might be different, depending on the components installed on your computer.
  5. To run both tests simultaneously, in the Component Tests menu, click Power Source, and then click Run once. Each component can also be tested individually.orr

AC Adapter Test:

The AC Adapter test provides an interactive test to determine if the AC power adapter is functioning properly. A good battery is required for this test. Before running the AC Adapter Test, HP recommends verifying that your computer can receive power by connecting a known working AC adapter.

Follow these steps to perform the AC Adapter Test.

  • In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click an AC Adapter Test.
  • Click Run once.
  • The AC Adapter Test begins.
  • When the test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.

Battery Test:

Follow these steps to perform the Battery Test:

  1. In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click Battery.
  2. Click Run once. The Battery Test begins.
  3. When the battery test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen. For additional battery information, click Battery Details.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you for your assistance and sorry for the delay in replying. I didn't look at the site for a few days but on seeing your reply, I then tried your diagnostics and even went through some other tests while I was there and everything passed.

Curiously my overheating issues, both on normal usage and on charging,  seemed to disappear a few days after posting my problem. I can't explain it as the only thing I've done differently is closing down all applications and switching off the device each time I use instead of just closing the lid. Could this be a possible reason for my overheating?

So thank you again for your assistance.

cheers Kapricorn

It could be a reason because the programs are running background may cause the heating issue.

But, I am glad the issue is resolved.
