I'm trying to make my grandma's laptop usable again. So far I got Windows back working and got the internet to work but only through the ethernet cable. The network adapter wifi light on the keyboard is orange and I cant get it to turn white.
In Device Manager the PCI Device (with the yellow exclamation) is showing up in other devices. When I go to update drivers it says "Windows encountered a problem..." "Realtek PCI CardReader Extension Component The install class is not present or is invalid"
The hardware ID is PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_5209&SUBSYS3577103C

The parts list for that model indicates that it comes with a Ralink RT5390 wifi adapter.

Since there are no other drivers missing it is one of three things...
1. You just need to install the HP connection manager, restart the PC and use the connection manager software to turn on the wifi.
This package provides the HP Connection Manager for the supported notebook models and operating systems.

2. If that does not get the wifi to work, then try removing and firmly reseating the wifi card, gets it to show up.
Sometimes the contacts get oxidized, breaking the electrical connection.
See if you can leave the antenna cables connected while doing that to facilitate an easy reinstall.
Here is the link to the service manual where you can find the wifi card R & R procedure.

3. If that fails to get the wifi card to work, then you can assume it is kaput and it needs to be replaced.
The model has a BIOS whitelist which prevents unsupported wifi cards from being installed.
So, you will have to replace the adapter with the same part number.
You should be able to find one on eBay by searching by the HP part number.
Find a listing where you actually see the HP part number on the card, not some stock photo.

Hi:
What is the product number of the notebook?
The product number can be found on the same label as the serial number.
Please do not post the serial number.
For the wifi, is there a Network Controller device showing up in the device manager with a little ! mark next to it?
That would be the wifi adapter in need of a driver.
For the card reader, try the latest driver directly from Realtek.
Download, unzip and run the setup application.

I installed the drivers and that allievated it showing up with an ! next to it. I was hoping that was in some way associated with the lack of wifi. Turns out, I was wrong. This is a Compaq Presario CQ57-489WM
