OMEN by HP - 17-an179wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have been having heating issues with my HP OMEN 17-AN179WM gaming laptop. On boot, it initially ramps up to 80C, then drops down to 40C-50C. It continuously bounces rapidly from 50C to 70C back and forth, eventually hitting 95C-100C as soon as I load the smallest of applications such as HWMonitor, or even just Task Manager.

What I have done to resolve the issue:

- Took out the heatsink and fans, thoroughly cleaned out all dust in the vents, fans and any crevice dust/hair could reside

- Cleaned out old thermal paste, re-applied with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut thermal paste

- Replaced battery with a new OEM battery (Old battery was struggling as it is and needed replacement, I wondered if power was an issue to the CPU. I get slightly better performance now, however the temp issue remains unresolved)

I don't believe fans are the issue because they sound and look as if they are functioning properly, and you can certainly feel them ejecting a lot of heat as temps rise. At this point I'm stumped, the only thing I can think of is if there is a crack in the heatsink I cannot see or there is corrosion buildup inside the copper pipes.

If anyone knows where I can purchase a heatsink for this model laptop, or any other tips to resolving the issue I would greatly appreciate it. I upgraded RAM to 64GB, and upgraded the M.2 drive and the secondary HDD to a SSD so I strongly prefer doing anything possible to keep this laptop alive given I have replaced every part essentially besides the motherboard, fans and heatsink.

Thank You!

Gaming notebooks are notoriusly hot running beasts.

I do suggest using a laptop cooling stand.
In the case of your laptop, one with fans would likely be appropriate.
A good one should bring the temperatures down a bit. I have the Amazon Essentials cooler stand and it does the job, although my laptop is not the powerful beast yours is.

Here is a link to options with images showing what I mean. Peruse the reviews to find the one that suits you if you decide to go this route.

BTW, there is no optional aftermarket processor or GPU heatsink available.

Thank you, I will be looking into a cooling stand for my laptop.

I know there are not any aftermarket heatsinks available, I was hoping to find used ones in the probably case they may be in better condition then mine. I have found similar models but nothing matching my exact laptop.

The closest I have been able to find this this one right here. Do you think it would work? The laptop model is same CPU as mine, only difference is its GTX 1060 not a GTX 1070.

You're welcome.

I wouldn't waste the $16.68.

I doubt if changing the original cooling solution will make any more improvement than the replacement of the thermal interface material did.
