I am praying that someone can help as I've been at this for more days and hours than I care to admit to. You wouldn't think that this would be so difficult.

A friend gave me an older laptop that she was no longer using. She did not have the original charger so I am using an old HP charger but that's not going so well. In the lower right corner when I hover over the battery it says "plugged in, not charging." But the "plugged in" is hit or miss, either it's because I'm using the wrong charger or there's a short in the cord.

I also continually get a pop up message that says: "... Your computer is designed to vary performance as needed when a smaller capacity Smart AC adapter is connected however your computer exceeds the power rating for the smart ac adapter connected. Please connect a higher capacity smart ac adapter."

Here's all the specs I can find on the laptop:

Hewlett-Packard

Model- HP Envy Notebook PC

Model#: E4S20UA# ABA

Intel Series 8

Windows 8.1

Intel Core i5-4200m@2.50GHz

Ram 6.00 (5.78 usable)

64 bit operating system x 64 based processor

No pen or touch input available

I don't know the year of the computer.

Apparently I need a "Smart Adapter" and apparently the one I'm currently using is the wrong wattage/voltage (I'm not sure of the difference there.) and I do not know what wattage/voltage the charger that I'm currently using is OR  what wattage/voltage it is that I need to purchase.

I've tried google searches and Amazon searches looking for a replacement but the choices are mind boggling. I also must have a computer for my work so I need to find this relatively quickly and as inexpensively as possible. I feel certain that if I just went with my gut and picked one out that I'd most likely end up having to ship it back which would be more money and more time so I figured my best bet would be to come here and ask the pros.

If anyone is able to help me out with this I would be eternally grateful as I'm losing my mind and under major time constraints.

Thanks so much !

Dawn

Hello @ERnurseDawn,

The HP ENVY 17-j099nr Notebook PC uses the Smart AC power adapter (65 watt) - 4.5mm barrel connector with HP Spare Part number 710412-001.

It also uses the Power cord (Black) - 3-wire conductor with HP Spare Part number 213349-001.

You can then use the HP Spare part number(s) in the HP Parts store hereYou may also be able to find it elsewhere on the Internet.

Example AC adapter with good reviews.

Example Power cord with good reviews.

Hope this helps,

Eddy

New charger has arrived ! The good news is that it is now at least charging the laptop but I'm still getting the pop up message about "you need to hook up a smart ac adapter." I can live with this pop up message if I have to since the computer is now charging, my concern is that not having the correct smart ac charger  (per the pop up message) could possibly harm the computer. What's your input on this?

Thanks !!

Hello @ERnurseDawn,

I'm both happy and sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately, HP SmartAdapter is not "smart" and is often very inaccurate. I've seen numerous posts on this forum where new buyers have complained that the included AC adapter was causing this issue on brand new devices.

To hide this message, follow the below steps:

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
  2. Navigate to the Startup tab
  3. Find and expand HP Message Service
  4. Right-click HP SmartAdapter and select Open file location
  5. Delete the application that is highlighted or delete SmrtAdptr

Hope this helps,

Eddy

I feel like a heel asking you another question when you've already been so helpful. 😞

But......if it's not too much trouble.

This person who was so kind to give me this computer does not remember her administrator password so there are many functions that I am unable to perform... such as deleting that annoying pop up message about the smart ac adapter, that action requires her password or fingerprint.

Is there anyway to remove her as administrator since she no longer uses the computer and doesn't remember the password?

Once again, I've googled for days with no helpful solutions. I've found numerous "solutions" but either none of them have worked or they require her password.

I guess these are the quirks when you get a computer given to you.

This pc does have fingerprint entry which can be used in place of the password but she is out of state so getting her fingerprint isn't really an option.

Thanks again,

Dawn
