Hi. I'm looking for a firmware update for the SSD in my laptop, a Samsung PM981. I'm having issues with it that would require a firmware update to fix. According to someone, the PM981 is just an OEM edition of the Samsung 970 EVO, and it got the firmware update that I need. I was told I could contact my OEM to get a firmware update for the drive. Can I get the latest firmware, if this is true? Thanks.

 Hello znq.

That someone that told you to contact the laptop manufacturer for a firmware update is correct. HP uploads firmware updates for HDD/SSD storage on the laptop's drivers page. You haven't told us what model your HP laptop is. Anyways, for some reason unknown to us users of HP products, they (almost) never offer firmware for Samsung drives, although they do offer it for Intel SSDs and some other brands (Kioxia for example).

I had a similar problem with my Probook 650 G8 which came with a PM991a 256gb SSD. There were problems from the very start, especially with overheating. HP offered no firmware update, I tried some drivers (from Win-Raid) to see if they made any difference, but finally did the right thing and got a good Kingston 1tb drive, and haven't looked back since. I was a big fan of the older Samsung SATA SSDs, but these OEM PCIe drives are always full of bugs. There are some repositories with firmware for your SSD by other laptop manufacturers, like on this github page, but unfortunately you have to be 1000% sure it is the exact same model of PM981 you have, otherwise you could end up with a dead drive..... In my case I couldn't find verified compatible firmware, even though there actually is an HP version on that repository. On the other hand, a same generation Probook 640 I have came with an Intel 660p, and HP actually has firmware updates on its page.......
