HP EliteBook 840 G5 Base Model Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I really did not know where else I could ask, so I will try my luck here. I just very recently bought an Elitebook 840 G5 second hand, that was used as a business laptop previously. First I was slightly surprised that there is no fingerprint scanner, but rather just a plastic cover, and now I am wondering about the webcam. The model I have is the one with "HP Sure View Integrated Privacy Screen 35.56 cm (14.0 in) diagonal FHD IPS anti-glare LED-backlit, 700 cd/m2, 72% sRGB with HD IR webcam for WWAN (1920 x 1080)" screen, and I am wondering if there is a possibility to add the camera privacy shutter to this screen. It looks like it could fit one, but I could not find any proper documentation on the matter, nor the privacy shutter itself.  The Verge had an article titled "HP’s new EliteBooks have a built-in webcam cover for privacy" and it talks about Gen 5 840's. There it is said that the default models have the webcam covers, but the models with the upgraded touch screen don't. My computer does not have a touch screen, so it should then have a webcam cover(?). I also found a mention in the Elitebook 840 G5 manual (page 3) under the product description; audio and video - it mentions the webcam, as well as a "Camera privacy shutter (only with non-touch camera panels)".

Hopefully someone here knows more or is more efficient with research and can help me with this, because i could not find any useful information regarding this even after hours of research.

Thanks!

Its specs is very close to my 840 G5 machine, my machine does not have finger print reader (I don't need it anyway), no microSD card reader (I definitely need it a lot, now I have to use an external reader to store some HP manuals, notes ... because its M.2 SSD is only 256GB. I installed tons of software on it already).

Back to the shutter, it is only a piece of black plastic, you can make it up yourself. My machine has it but I can't find its part #

    also its manual

I use my machine with the lid closed 100%. I only used camera few times when using Zoom to talk with our Inner Cycle members.

I get that it's only a piece of plastic, and even a paper note like some people use would so the job, but I'm looking for a more elegant solution. Is it attached via magnets or is it friction fit to the display frame or how does it work? Since it slides to block the camera I assume it does not come out easily or?

For me I'm usually working on stuff while not stationary at a desk, so I do not work with the lid closed ever, I have a desktop computer for that purpose.

But surely there should be at least some AliExpress seller or someone who would have the camera slider part from refurbished computers, but I actually can't find anything. Very weird

No, it is a simple "sliding door", I don't think it uses magnet as ahown

Sorry I can't find its part # as mentioned above. Even with its part # finding it is to find a needle in a haystack.

Hmm ok and thanks, I guess an option could be then to try and make a plastic piece that would fit into the place where the slider should be, not sure how nice I can make it myself though + if it would slide as its supposed to. In your computer is there any kind of lip, edge or rail for the sliding part, so that it does not fall out, or does it seem like its attached just by the holy spirit?

I'll still see if someone else has somehow managed to find the part number, or even a similar part that could possibly work in this laptop, since I really would like to have some kind of physical shield for the webcam, and a post-it note does not seem that appealing.

Well took matter into my own hands now, and found an old loyalty card that I don't use, cut it, filed it down and drilled holes for the cameras. Turned out pretty ok, and it stays in decently well, but I'll have to see if it lasts as well (it is just held down with friction). I checked and the IR camera works totally normally so Windows Hello still works in the dark, and the normal camera is not obstructed in any way either. It's not perfect but I think it looks better than a post-it note at least.

I would still like to get the genuine HP part since I imagine it is slightly better, but this will do for now.
