I have an odd problem, my battery will not charge when the laptop is switched on but will when it is turned off. All the methods of checking say to remove the battery, but that is impossible with this model without totally dismantling it. Does anyone know another method?

It could be the battery or even the power adapter. If the adapter is no longer providing enough power to charge and run the laptop at the same time you will experience this.
Immediately after powering on start tapping the Esc key. This will open a menu where F2 System Diagnostics is an option. Tap F2 key and look for Component Tests. Inside that category should be a Power category where you can test battery and power adapter.

Battery tested OK, power adapter wouldn’t test! Suspected that the sense wire in the lead was damaged, so stripped the outer off and found the break. Retested the adapter and it passed. Wrapped the lead with spiral wrap and all now working correctly. Looks like one of our cats bit through the cable. This does seem to be a not uncommon problem as the plasticiser used is highly attractive to particularly cats but possibly other animals too.
