At least we know why it doesn't work.

Hard drives/SSD's do not come with an operating system installed.

Here's what I recommend you do...

You can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall Windows, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.  You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive to create the recovery media with.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Customer Support

You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.

HP Cloud Recovery Tool - Microsoft Store Apps

Since you have to use the utility on another PC, you will need to enter your notebook's product number in the tool's search window in order to proceed to make the recovery media.

Hi:

Did you install an operating system on the new drive?

There shouldn't be any reason why the WD Black SN850x wouldn't work.

It won't run at its maximum advertised read/write speeds from your notebook's PCIe Gen 3.0 slot, but it should work.

I have not. It came with windows 11 installed. I am unsure on how to recover it from my microsoft account and get it back on the new ssd. I am thinking that I will need to download it to a thumb drive and install from there. Is that correct?
