I'm trying to find out the SATA speed on my Pavilion 17-e055nr.  I've gone through 3 hard drives (seems it runs hot) and I'm thinking of picking up a SATA SSD to see if that lasts for a few more years.  However, I don't want to spend extra on a SATAIII if the motherboard only supports SATAI or SATAII.

You would have a hard time finding a SATA-II SSD and you would not want it as it would be older and would not have the benefit of the newest controller chipset. Your motherboard supports SATA-III but even if it did not a SATA-III SSD would downclock fine to a SATA-II interface and you would never know the difference. SATA-III SSDs are just about the only thing you would find on the market at this point and would be no more expensive per gig than an older SATA-II if you could find one.

Best option: Samsung 850 Evo

Thanks! I found a PNY Sata III that is supposed to have test speeds higher than the EVO for $73 at BestBuy. Fingers crossed it lasts longer than the other HDDs I used.
